Durante anos a Academia foi duramente criticada por não deixar claro como as categorias menores, que possuem seus próprios branches, reduzem a lista total de filmes aptos para o menor número possível. Na prática, cada uma possui regras próprias. O comitê executivo de efeitos especiais, por exemplo, cria uma pré-lista que vai para votação de todos os demais membros deste branch, sendo que é nesta etapa que surgem os nomeados ao Oscar desta categoria; na categoria de curtas, membros selecionados do branch assistem a todos os aptos e criam uma pré-lista para os demais membros votarem aos nomeados ao Oscar.

A partir desta premiação, estas pré-listas foram divulgadas de forma transparente e precisa – com informações complementares sobre a metodologia de escolha – de forma conjunta.
